Test Automation Case Study
Case Study: Streamlining Medical Device Manufacturing
Challenge: A leading medical equipment manufacturer, with two plants operating at a three-shift capacity, needed to optimize production and improve operational efficiency. The reliance on manual testing was creating a bottleneck, hindering throughput and limiting the company’s ability to introduce new products.
My Role: As the on-call engineer for both the U.S. and Latin American manufacturing plants, I was tasked with ensuring the operational continuity of all test equipment. I initiated a comprehensive study to identify opportunities for improvement and was given the full authority to design and implement a new, automated testing system. I was the lead in this initiative, responsible for both the software and hardware design, and the overall project execution. Additionally, I led training for the newly implemented systems in both English and Spanish to ensure a seamless transition for the global teams.
The Solution: I designed and constructed a custom test automation system that fully replaced the manual testing process. The solution leveraged C++ to create a robust software framework, using the IEEE-488 protocol to seamlessly interface with test measurement equipment like rack-mounted test equipment like digital volt meters, power supplies, and spectroradiometers. This innovative system included proprietary algorithms, developed using the Eureka mathematical program, which preceded the modern industry standard Mathcad, to automate complex calculations and optimize the entire testing cycle.
The Results:
- Significantly Increased Efficiency: The new system allowed each plant to reduce its operations from three shifts to just one, dramatically cutting labor costs and improving overall productivity.
- Enhanced Product Quality: By eliminating human error, the automated system ensured consistent and reliable quality control for all pulse oximeter production.
- Maximized Production: The software and hardware optimizations directly contributed to a nearly 100% increase in LED production, freeing up valuable resources for new product development.
This project was a success and, in recognition of my contribution, I was awarded the President’s Award for making the single biggest impact on the company. It serves as a powerful testament to my ability to deliver scalable, impactful, and technologically advanced solutions.
